Slax is amongst the Ten worst distros of 2009
Today is a big day for Slax.
It has been nominated as the 'worst distribution of 2009'.
Quoted from Ken Hess's article at Daniweb:
"Maybe it's just me but I've never successfully created my own distribution with any of these. Either the instructions are too vague or I just don't have the time to waste trying to troubleshoot every dependency under the sun. Big time wasters include LinuxFromScratch, Slax and Cross Linux From Scratch."
As you can see, the author of the article is not able to create his own variant of Slax. Even my kids can do that by using the web interface. But the author can't. Should I redesign the build user interface? Hm.
To be honest, this is the first time I see Slax in a list of bad distros. Well, it is the first time I see a list of bad distros in general ;) So I look forward to see more lists like those, and I wish to not see Slax mentioned there - with the hope that others will find Slax more useful than Ken Hess.

User comments

I read the article earlier . Normally, when I read a review regarding slax , I would post on slax's forum , but I felt the article was almost devoid of any practical objective and posting a link on slax's forum would only lead to more users visiting it , so I didn't post on it.
The writter should make a list of 10 best / tolerable distro so at least we will know what he considers as good (tolerable?).
I haven't tried Linux from sctrach but I had skimmed thru their documentation . Remastering slax is hardly in the same category effort wise.

:)) I wonder how guys like this can even use a computer and more than that create a blog to spread all of his stupidness to more people like him. In my opinion Slax is in the top 10 best distribution of all times not only 2009.
Thanks for your great work and your effort Thomas!!!

@ Simple user ^^ i think exactly like you
also Tomas, it is scarying easy to build an own slax based livecd, i really would like to know if this silly guy is even able to use a xterm oO or even live without X
anyway, building my own slax based live cd was in the age of slax5, now in slax6 i am much more advanced after just 2 tries and i have a really clean, perfect, customized os which is in my opinion better than any other os for me and my pc + i do not need to switch to gentoo and build the system like 2 days , the slax installation takes me max 5 minutes to do it with lilo ,extlinux and/or syslinux :)
so keep it up as you did before Tomas, it IS one of the top ten BEST distro's in the eyes of many many people ;)
just my 2 cents

Tomas, you may find that critic useful, but to be honest, this guy just misunderstands the goal of distributions as a whole.
Slax is, well, a LiveCD (not a build-your-own distribution), and the modules system is one of the best ideas for a LiveCD! He just doesn't get the goal of Slax! It's just like criticizing Ubuntu Desktop Edition because it isn't good for servers!
Plus, build-your-own distros are a learning tool and not for creating your own distributions!

This to me appears to just be a standard rant.
As Ivo Georiev said, he appeared to miss the point of some of the distributions in his quick overview.
I find it interesting that he seemed to have such a distaste for the build-your-own distros, as [Cross] Linux From Scratch has excellent documentation that is easy to follow.
He also appears to have contradicted his opinion about ubuntu in a previous posting (as linked by a commenter on the page).
"Should I redesign the build user interface?"
No, the interface is nice, but I would imagine that some users might be put off by realizing a few modules were broken in some regard after downloading them or if they could not find the Slackware modules (which currently do not show up on the search unless you limit the search to only Slackware modules).
The system is fine, but it does need tuning.

I agree with fundamental: if you want to change the module search function to display modules in this order Official modules --> slackware modules --> approved modules --> unverified modules.
As for the list... well, I have a t-shirt that reads "I'm allergic to stupid people". You should buy one too and don't give another thought to guys that post useless crap on a blog.
The only thing that saddens me is knowing I'll never get back those 2 minutes I spent reading that crappy post :'(

@Tomas:
Did you contact the guy? Are you really sure, he didn't try to make his distro via linux-live scripts?
I mean this statement:
Working example
If you're just looking for a working Linux Live system, visit www.slax.org

And I'm almost sure that's the case. He didn't even mention NimbleX!
Demand immediate rectification!

Tomas,
Is ok to be humble and give critics a chance, but there are limits.
Your distro is actually YOURS. Slax has a very particular definition which all of us (slaxers: slax users) find very nice.
You also have an open forum to listen opinions and suggestions; this is the slax we want, and personally I thank you every day for your time and dedication.
So, long live to the stupid bloggers and his narrow ideas, we feel great knowing the huge difference between us!!

Let's not forget that some bloggers who use (and depend on) advertisement revenue often resort to controversy to up the traffic of a website that is either losing attractiveness or that never had much to start with.
Some of us might still remember a certain beranger who used this tactic extensively & even tried to establish himself as a Linux distro 'authority' in days gone by.
When you are quite unable to create something noteworthy yourself, the next step to fame is to destroy/kill something/someone noteworthy & universally known & recognized.
Therefore, in some odd ways, the fact that Slax & some other fine distros are mentioned in this article could actually be regarded as a mark of recognition.

Although I can locate some minor weak spots in your implementation of 'modular linux', I am using your distribution as the base layer for many computers including desktop pcs, development stations, netbooks even servers. My carefully forged opinion through usage all this time is that Slax can be whatever the user wants it to be. The simple user will go with the 'modular' design while the advanced user can easily tailor Slax to his occasional needs.
I'm sure there are distributions which could seem more 'user friendly' or more 'complete' (=bloated) in some manner of speaking but your minimalistic approach is highly flexible and this is its primary strength.
Keep it this way mate, and btw your linux live scripts on the backstage are excellent work.

Miltos Houtzeos,
Computer Engineer.

Hey Tomas, I just downloaded and installed your Slax today, I've been using Ubuntu but was looking for a smaller size distro that would run live or installed and get me on the internet with my Huwaei E220 usb modem and your Slax is the best distro I have tried. I love the fact that I can download the modules and install them so easily and I like the look and layout of your system, thanks so much for your efforts, I hope the negative review does not bother you too much, Finding it so easy to download, install and customise Slax I can only come to the conclusion that the reviewer was an absolute idiot ! Congratulations on a fantastic distro. Thanks Simon :)

I am a linux enthusiast...wouldn't call myself a pro..but i do a quick google search my keywords being "Portable Operating System"...Naturally i go with the first result i get...and it says "Six Best Portable Operating Systems".... and what do you know...SLAX is on the list...
So it's rather dumb for someone to trash off something, just because he lacks enough understanding about it...
LIke someone said...this is your distro...you built it from scratch!! has this guy made anything? an application leave alone a distro!!
If Linus Torvalds said it...we would be having a totally different conversation..
Keep up the good work Tomas,

Tomas, I have different review: everytime something fails to work under Ubuntu (which I use at home) or WinXP (at work), I use Slax. Slax is the best live distro I've ever tried. Keep doing good job! And thanks a lot!

I selected my modules directly on your website. Installed on USB. Struggled a little bit with "supplicant and co " for wifi but succeeded.
Result: your distro is great, loading is quick and I like it a lot.
I precise that I'm clumsy with keyboard like wearing
boxing gloves, bored by programming and new to linux.
Thank you for your work. Don't worry for this guy's comment: may be he is paid by the number of visitors on his site and that is what he found to be read.
Finaly he is very useful: till now, I had never praised your work.

Ok so I read the article. I came to this conclusion, before i was half way done with the article. This guy must work for Microsoft.

he must be fucking stupid or something.
he calls a few of the top distros worst.

@Greek Dude,
YES HE IS FUCKING STUPID, maybe he was looking at it from the wrong side :)
Definitely agree with you!

I just randomly checked your website today to see if it was finally running and I have to say that the build user interface was extremely easy to use.
I was very happy when I saw that the (build Slax) was up and running. thank you for a beautiful variant of linux.

I use normally several distribution of Linux and I think Slax is the best, so I'm very bad with this news and I'm in disagree with it.
So Tomas, your work is great and this is not a true news.
Congratulations for your excellent work.

Simply blullshits because i've made my own distro based upon slax (started with version 6.02) and you can see it @ www.linuxdavinci.tk.
And no, i didn't use the web interface, but i htink that the new version that will be based upon kde4 will be made from that :) So...thanks for all the effort you put on slax and...when will be a new slax with kde4 natively on it? :)

Hey man;
I download, test and break distros for fun. Have been doing so for 3 years. Reading that slax is in the bottom 10 is bizarre. For me it's top 10, if not top 5. I haven't used it in a year or so, so I came back to see how 6 was going, but my old USB stick had Slax 5 and it had to be my favourite toy; served well to convert people to Linux in general. You are a champion, Slax is a champion distro, thank you and the community for all of your hard work.
Cheers from Oz

i've compared almost all distro and trial to new pc, notebook, and even old pc (P2, P3) . and slax running smoothly than other :) Congratulations for your excellent work.

The Poster of that article writes BULLSHITS! like Tomas says about the Bible, Noah's Bullshit, etc.
Why does not he say that to the author's face, that his work is BULLSHITS like NOAHS!

Through out the years, I’ve worked with different flavors of Unix such as Digial, AIX and SCO. Four about the last 3 or 4 years I’ve been working Linux, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc. And then, finally I cam across SLAX Linux. WOW, this little is wonderful little tool. It was incredibly easy to install and configure. So easy a caveman could have done it. So, when somebody nominates SLAX as one of the top 10 worst Linux distro’s, I gotta believe that this guy is living in an alternate universe.

i do not understand how slax could be a "worst distro". the author that wrote the article is skilled in english grammar but performed poorly in reasoning skills and skills in acquiring knowledge about linux distros in general. perhaps, his goal was to write a "sensation" article and in this area he did well. he should avoid writing articles about problems with linux distros and focus on writing "true romance" articles found in the magazines at grocery stores.

I'm a total n00b to linux and was only got to try different distros recently when I bought my new 8 GB USB flash drive.. I've tried others like Linux Mint... which seems pretty good.. that is if you install it on an actual hard disk--it runs so slow on the USB flash drive! Not to mention it won't mount my NTFS drives on the next boot... it was a pain.. The only thing I really liked about it is the .cbr comic reader it has... I wish Slax has it.. I forgot what its called.
Another one I've tried is the Damn Small Linux (DSL)... heck.. I never even made it to desktop environment... I keep getting errors...
But mannnn! Finally! I found Slax Linux! I really wasn't expecting much when I downloaded it.. I was surprised it runs this good and this fast on a USB flash drive! Not to mention it mounts all my ntfs hard drives automatically... and not only that, it also comes with a media player that can play .mkv video files flawlessly without hogging all the cpu resource! A .mkv 720p video file that was running slow on my WinXP and other linux distros I've tried was running normally in Slax--autoloading the subtitles and not loosing any of the original formatting of the fonts on playback! Amazing! lol
Thanks for this awesome Linux distro! Keep it up! ;)
-randz-
ps.
I tried to search for a good .cbr comic reader in the modules area but didn't even find a single one.. I tried downloading and installing from other sites and I keep getting errors.. got any suggestions of a good one?

Slax is the best OS I know, I am Arabian and I am using the usb Slax every time I use public PC for security, it is smart, easy and support many languages

What!
that's bullshit................
The first time i use a linux system was slax OS..........
then i tried alot of distros but slax beat them all
I love linux because slax is here
No slax.....No linux.........
Tomas M., U R the best ......... keep this great work and long live slax

I understand your feeling,
I am a slackware user, and I came to slax 2 year ago
Slax is good distro based on slackware
I love Patrick's style
I use slackware on hdd
and slax on usb
the most problem I have to cop with while using slax is lack of Ram, my PC has 2GB of Ram
It always use all of my ram while the swap is not used
I hope Mr Toma do something to solve this
except of that case, Slax is a beautiful distro

I think it is one of the best...Should be way up there on the best distro list....i even have it installed (Live) to my old PC's Hard Drive!!!

Hi!
I have been using Slax 6.1.2 for few weeks now, and it is wonderful! I have experimented with dozens of distros for the last couple of years now, and Slax has gone to the top of my list. The ease of use and the ability to remaster live cds is really great. I am a dummy when it comes to programming, so really appreciate the Instruction Guides that are on your Web Page. As this message is being written, I am utilizing a Slax Live CD now. Runs like a charm!
As the people have written before me in this blog, you can see your work and Slax are much appreciated! Give yourself a good pat on back.
Thanks for a continuing a job well done!

Hello from Russia. I am linux-obsessed in my wishes but not in practice. I always watch some Youtube videos about th work of some linux distros and say to myself that I would want this working on my laptop. All of the linux distros I used (5 maybe) I came to disappointment, to my own opinion most of them are raw, buggy, and not user-friendly.
Once I came across an article about Slax on Acer Aspire One. I decided to use Slax on the netbook of my niece, and here we go, I must say Slax is the best distro I have ever seen working on any computers. It is fast, stable, and all the things I need on the comp are here: Skype 3 (in Ubuntu forum they say Skype is not for Linux, come on it is not true, all work, webcam, voice, and my Skypephone as well), my old mobile phone can work as a GPRS modem, WiFi, and such.
Master of Slax, you are geniuos. Thank you///

For me, Slax is the best. I have checked almost every other distros, and I still choose Slax.

Sorry, I realize that this is an old post. However, Google found it...
I've tried installing between 5 and 10 "easy" distros, and Slax is the only one that worked.
I'm a Windows guy, and barely understand Linux, much less how its distros work, and I am doing something odd: installing Slax as a virtual machine under Oracle Virtualbox on Windows 10 Home.
Yet Slax worked the first time.
True, I am still trying to get something working to share data with the host OS (I think Slax contains no features to support Virtualbox), but I imagine in the long run that will not be difficult once I get enough help.
The important point is that Slax runs, and its Chromium browser and file manager work, too. That is a big deal in 2021, and I see nothing to justify a harsh criticism of this distro.

Maybe it is a wakeup call?
Seriously though, I think that the guy there is just putting Bullshit!, like you say about Noah :)
Slax is a great linux Live OS, highly customizable, does this guy need a video, he should check out captain_picard's howtos/videos. I think that that guy is writing trash!
Slax is not a bad distro at all. In fact it is a great distro and one of the BEST if not the BEST.
I also not wish to see slax mentioned like that! Regardless of other controversial issues discussed on blog.
Point Made here Tomas. Please disregard what this idiot wrote. You make a great OS, you make it easy for them, what more do they want? If they want you to stop critizing the things of life, they should just tell you so and stop writing trash like this!
Do not worry! You make a great linux OS small and with a big punch :) Ignore this guy! He is writing worthless BULLSHIT like you say about NOAH's BULLSHIT on blog :)
Keep it coming :)
